The Tourism Master Plan for the Azores Region (POTRAA) was prepared in order to develop and consolidate a sustainable tourism sector, to contribute to the overall economic development, the preservation of the natural and human environment, the correct landuse distribution and the attenuation of the social-economic differences in the Region. Several scenarios were studied for the growth of the tourist accommodation offer and of its territorial distribution. The scenario adopted for 2015 considered an average annual growth rate of tourism accommodation between 6 and 7%, which means that by 2015 there will be around 18,000 tourist beds in the Azores, roughly twice as many as in 2004.
