URBAN PLAN AND ENVIRONMENTAL ASSESSMENT FOR THE CHAMANCULO C AREA

This study was contracted under the Trilateral Technical Cooperation Project: Helping the Requalification of the Chamanculo C Area, as a result of an agreement by the Maputo Municipal Council, the Governments of Brazil and Italy and the Cities Alliance, financed by these partners. Special attention was given to previous experiences in slum/illegal settlements rehabilitation in Brazil, with Italian technical cooperation.
The Chamanculo C Project is defined as a pilot-project, which includes short-term measures in order to improve the population’s living conditions and the implementation of urgent construction works.
The area has 1.4 sq km and a population of 26,000, with very high densities.
The objectives of this study are the preparation of an Integrated Assessment and Diagnosis on Urban Planning, Environment and socio-economic issues; and setting up an integrates database.
